This series of drawings and collages explore diagrammatic depictions of the body, prosthetics, and tumors/physical abnormalities.
Self Portrait in a Chair
Self Portrait in a Chair is a gif animation of a diffuse rotating cloud hovering above a line drawing of a chair. It was the culmination of a series of drawings featuring abstractions of bodies among various furniture.
Look Inside Place
Look Inside Place is a virtual world and unwinnable game. The viewer explores the world as an androgenous anatomical figure drawing. As you explore you discover a world map from a collage of children’s books scientific cut away elevations. The world at first seems innocuous but soo you discover that things are not quite right but as you explore black text begins to crowd the screen and smog your view.
Unseen Worlds
Unseen Worlds, written in 2011 as a Master’s thesis, is focused on the underlying conceptual framework of the artist’s work at the time. While an important document in the growth of BlinkPop’s work it no longer accurately reflects their opinion and practice.
Twisted
Twisted is a series of color scans depicting extreme close ups of twisted plastic bags. The images were an experiment in mapping the tension of organismhood and the relationship between the embodied experience and the image technologies we use to scan, document, and diagnose those experiences.
Plain Fake Loading Bar
Plain Fake Loading Bar generates unique loading bars but nothing ever loads. The viewer simply waits and waits with no answers, satisfaction, or relief, an experience akin to the frustration of waiting but never receiving help from doctors when you have a complex disability. It was the first piece BlinkPopShift created in collaboration with Steve Sedlmayr.
Skins
Skins are a series of 3D paper piecing textiles which attempt to model the curvatures of skin around the curves of a body. Skin is the organ that protects and contains the body, hides its workings and maladies, and is interpreted and assigned meaning by others.
Migraine Models
The Migraine Models are 3D models of the unusual pain sensations associated with chronic migraine attacks. Living through a major health crisis in which doctors did little to explain or alleviate the chronic disabling migraine attacks I turned to these models to externalize and thus study the experiences myself. These pieces, made from 2007-2009, transitioned my art practice from hobbyist to professional.
